We believe that the Shankland name originated in south-west Scotland and has spread out from there to the rest of the British Isles and then to the whole of the English-speaking world. This is what is suggested by the data currently contained in the Shankland Database, which to date has over 15,000 "events" in it reflecting life events such as birth, marriage, death, emigration, etc.
However, the picture is probably not as clear-cut as this might indicate, since the coverage of data from different areas and different periods is very uneven. Research therefore continues to collect data on these life events. Meanwhile, the articles below show the current distribution data as available.
